Disadvantages/Advantages
Speech
Recognition is very easy to use. You can even use it while doing
something else. Also, in cars, speech recognition is a big
advantage because you can keep both hands on the steering wheel
and at the same time, you can give the car a command. Companies
that use phones with speech recognition also have a big
advantage. This is because the person who is calling does not
have to wait for a human to be done with other callers and then
pick up. This is also good for the company that you are calling
because they won't have to hire a multitude of staff members.
Also, disabled people are at an advantage with speech
recognition because they can talk instead of typing if their
arms or hands have been damaged or cut off. Some advantages are
also present for an average person. If someone's wrist, fingers,
or arms are tired or hurting, then they can use speech
recognition to speak commands instead of tiring themselves even
more. Those are only some of the current advantages to speech
recognition.
Some current
disadvantages of speech recognition are that it can only type up
to 50 words per minute and it might not be completely
accurate all the time and might receive the wrong words.
Another current advantage to speech recognition is that it is 95%
accurate, but this is also a disadvantage because the 5%
inaccuracy might make a huge difference. An example is if
someone dictates a long sentence to a computer with speech
recognition very fast, then it might alter the sentence and
change it into something else. Also, the inaccuracy might cause
two words that you say to form into one word. Also, when you are
talking, extra noise might be heard by the microphone and the
program might not completely hear what you said or it might add
the sound in the background, which could be coming from many
sources such as other people doing things like talking or
working inside the area in which you are in. Although this is a
big disadvantage right now, it might change in the future, just
like another problem, which is that it needs a large amount of
computer power and memory. Another current problem to speech
recognition is homonyms, which are words that sound alike, but
are different, like heir and air.
