Pros And Cons

Human genetic engineering has the potential to be a great thing but it also has some downsides. The main downsides are obvious. It is dangerous and it makes everyone less unique.

Human genetic engineering can be very dangerous. The tools and the knowledge that scientists have for it is very primitive. The anti-genetic engineering site, safe-food.org compares genetic engineering to doing heart surgery with a shovel. But that is only today. In 100 years, we may have the tools to genetically engineer humans easily.

It can also be dangerous when misused by humans. Genetic Engineering can also be a tool for terrorism. Terrorists could spread diseases in a particular area much faster and more efficiently with genetic engineering. People could also mutate diseases to make them worse.

The other negative aspect of human genetic engineering is less about science as it is about personal opinion and belief. If everyone is modified to become perfect, then the world in some people's opinions may be boring. There will be no individuality in the human race.

Although there are many risks with human genetic engineering, there is a sky high reward. The horrific genetic diseases that affect many people today may not be a problem. Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's might all be curable. For someone who has these diseases, genetic engineering would probably be worth the risk.
