Spring Semester Exam Policies for Upper
School
SENIORS: Seniors are required to take finals
if they have an average of 79 or lower for the spring semester OR
have missed more than 18
class periods for the entire year (9 in a one-semester course) in a
particular course. Their final will last a class period and count 1/7th
of the semester average. Senior finals will be given May 15-16 during
the regular teaching day.
Grades 9-11
Finals for grades 9-11 will be given beginning Tuesday, May 22, through
Thursday, May 24, 1:00. These exams count 25% of the semester average.
Exams should be substantial enough to justify these percentages.
Avoid constructing exams which are basically objective. Students
should have a least some short answer and essay style questions or
should require students to work out problems to show that they know
the procedures. The format of the final should be similar to the
format of the tests given during the semester. Please make
sure that the two-hour (approximately) exams take at least 1 ½ hours
.
No student should have more than two finals per day. Some high school
multi-grade electives may occur on days with required courses to total
more than two finals for particular students. Other students are taking
courses off the normal grade level. Please discuss an alternative testing
time for these students so that they have no more than two exams in
a day.
Students may not have regularly scheduled tests and quizzes during
finals week, Monday through Thursday, nor should the end of the preceding
week be loaded with several tests and quizzes and projects.
Exams should not contain material which has never
been quizzed or tested. Students should be absolutely clear about the contents of the
exam, preferably well in advance of the actual test.
If the exam for the course earns more low grades than normal, especially
if there is an unusual number of Cs, Ds, and Fs, please bring your
grades to my attention before entering them. Ideally, an exam reflects
the quality of the work done during the semester.
Exams may not be higher than 100. Do NOT post grades. If students
want to know their test grades and semester averages before report
cards are mailed, please give them the information privately or by
handing out their graded tests.
