Fourth-grader wins art contest, has work on display at SAMA
Congratulations to fourth-grader Pia, who will have a painting displayed at the San Antonio Museum of Art.
The museum recently held a contest inviting students throughout Bexar County to create a superhero inspired by an object in the museum’s collection and create a work of art of that character.
Pia created a figure based on an artifact in the museum’s Asian collection. She called her work “Mighty.”
The name came because the figurine is tiny and Pia wanted to show that “tiny is mighty.” The rest of the painting packs in a lot of symbolism: the two colors of the figure show that superheroes have two sides; the hearts signify love, a bottle signifies medicine and healing. The figure holds a mask for safety and grapes to signify wealth and food. On the top left of the painting is a book, to symbolize that this figure is smart, too.
Pia’s submission was selected for “Most Expressive,” and her painting will be digitally displayed at SAMA from now until April 20.
