Middle school summer English projects on display

A collection of custom-designed T-shirts are on display in North Hall, courtesy of the fifth graders in Mrs. Luckie’s English class.

They created their designs based on their summer reading projects, “The Night Diary,” by Veera Hiranandani, “The Book of Boy,” by Catherine Gilbert Murdock  or Newberry Award-winning “Merci Suarez Changes Gears,” by Meg Medina.  Their assignment: choose one of the books and create a T-shirt that incorporates at least three important elements of the book.

Above the shirts are essays from the 6th graders inspired by “Ban This Book,” by Alan Gratz. Students then wrote a brief piece about either “The Call of the Wild,” by Jack London, “Julie of the Wolves,” by Jean Craighead George, “A Wrinkle in Time,” by Madeleine L’Engle, or “Hoot,” by Carl Hiaasen — all books that have been banned at one time.
