Second graders use simple machines to capture Cupid

With memories and candies from Valentine’s Day still fresh, the second graders capped off their unit on simple machines by combining them to build contraptions that can catch Cupid.

The students combined principles of levers, screws, pulleys, inclined planes and wedges to create elaborate traps that could capture the Roman deity of love and affection.

Students brought their projects, demonstrated them, explained how they worked and which simple machines they incorporated. Many of the projects offered variations on a baited trap. And the preferred item for bait. Chocolate kisses, of course.
