Seventh-grader reigns as Spelling Bee champ

Congratulations to Mara, a seventh-grader who won Keystone’s Spelling Bee.

Over a two-hour stretch, she outpaced 17 other competitors in grades 3-8 over more than 20 rounds and sealed the victory by correctly spelling “volatile” and then “plasma.”

Eighth-grader Ishan finished as runner up. This year’s Bee included vocabulary questions.  Other spelling words: visite, diaphoresis, Lascaux, and dropsonde.

Mara must now take an exam that tests vocabulary before she can qualify for the citywide Spelling Bee.
